Franklin is a small town in western North Carolina, located within the Nantahala National Forest. It is an official destination on the Appalachian Trail. It is at times nicknamed "Gem Capital of the World." While this name may be a bit exaggerative, the area is rich in gem production.

Originally, the land was roamed by the Cherokee Native Americans, who called the area "Nikwasi," meaning "center of activity." This was an ancient and vital Cherokee village. The town of today was founded in 1820.

Today, Franklin is known for its beautiful surrounding forests, mountains, and farmland.
