Solano County Government Center
Fairfield is a city in central California, located halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento, being about 36 miles from each. It is also 31 miles from Oakland

Originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, the first European contact was by the Spanish in 1810, when they attacked the native peoples here. The land was purchased from the Indians in the early 1850's by a wealthy ship captain and landowner from Connecticut, and after taking steps to establishing a town there, he sold the land off in small parcels, at great profit, thus beginning a town in 1856. In 1858, he entered the town in the competition to be seat of Solano County, and won, thus making his land all the more valuable. The town's name comes from the captain's hometown of Fairfield, Connecticut.

Today, Fairfield is known for its proximity to other notable Bay Area cities of California, for its Air Force base location, and downtown area.
