Fairfax is an affluent town in northeastern Virginia, located 16 miles southwest of Washington D.C. and considered a part of that city's metropolitan area. It is known as one of the wealthiest zip codes in the United States.

The town was established as a cluster of farms in the 18th Century, and is named for members of the elite Fairfax family of that time.

Today, Fairfax is known for its wealthy population, colonial homes and mansions, downtown area, upscale shopping, horseback riding, and education.

Fairfax in People's Lives

Gore Vidal: I lived here briefly as a child, around 1935 - 1936, when I was 10 years old. I lived with my mother, whom I could not stand, and her new husband, the wealthy stepfather of Jacqueline Kennedy. We lived at the Merrywood estate in the McLean area.

Jared Leto: My mother moved here around 1979, when I was about 8 years old. We moved to Washington D.C. around 1985, when I was about 14 years old.
