In the upcoming years, when Thompson got her first acting gigs on television, many of them would co-star her with Fry and Laurie.

Thompson met Kenneth Branagh in 1987, while filming the TV series Fortunes of War. They married in 1989, and proceeded to create multiple lucrative films together. Their relationship was heavily followed by the media, and they were dubbed as acting's "golden couple." The two attempted to have a normal relationship, and refused to be photographed or interviewed together. They were married for six years, and divorced in 1995. At first, they stated that the reason for their seperation was their work schedules, but it later became known that Branagh had fallen in love with another woman - Helana Bonham Carter.

Following her painful divorce in 1995, Thompson met Greg Wise, her co-star in Sense and Sensibility. She later said in an interview that she was severely depressed at the time, and that the film, and Greg, "saved me." The two began a relationship. In 1999, Thompson had her first child with Wise - a daughter. She was 39 when she gave birth to her. The couple tried for years to have another child, but did not succeed. They married in 2003, and then adopted an orphan and former child-soldier from Rwanda, after meeting him at a Refugee Council event when he was 16 years old.

Thompson was a friend of Alan Rickman.

Thompson's friends include Ben Elton and Meryl Streep.

Thompson married Greg Wise in 2003.
