Dortmund is the 8th largest city in Germany.
The city was first mentioned in history in 882, but was later almost completely destroyed in a massive fire. It was rebuilt in 1152 by Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor.
Through-out the 20th Century, Dortmund was a city often choked in smog and industrial clamor due to extensive steel and coal mining. Contrastingly, the city in now known for its environmentalism and lush green parks, being one of the few cities where just five minutes outside of the downtown area, you can find yourself suddenly in a thick, wild forest.
