Donaldsonville is a town in eastern Louisiana, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It is considered part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area, or a suburb of that city.

The first European settlement here was by the French, who named the area "Lafourches-des-Chitimachas," around 1755. At the time, the town was made up of a cluster of plantations that mainly farmed sugar cane with African slaves.

Today, Donaldsonville is known for its Victorian architecture, large country estates and houses, and its progressive attitude toward civil rights.
