Lottie Deno: After the death of my father in the Civil War, I was sent here at the age of 18 by my mother, to find a suitable husband, in 1862. I was accompanied by my faithful slave Mary, who was a formidable seven feet tall. My mother's plan did not work out, and I did not find a husband. The money that I had come here with was soon drained, and I decided to begin gambling, as my father had taught me. I was quite successful in this, and Mary acted as my bodyguard. I traveled frequently along the Mississippi River playing card games, and left this city for good in 1865, heading to San Antonio.
