Dallol was a town in the Danakil Desert of northern Ethiopia, located on the foothills of the Dallol Volcano, which last erupted in 1926. It is officially the hottest inhabited place on earth in terms of average daily temperature, a typical day's temperature having a low of 94 and a high of 116. It is also one of the most remote places on the planet, surrounded by one of the most brutal deserts in the world, with no roads. It is only reachable by camel caravans that frequently stop to collect salt. Today, it is abandoned, classified as a ghost town.
It was founded in 1918 as a salt mining village.
Today, it is known for its extreme temperatures, salt mining, isolated location, and for the beautiful colors of the rocks in the area.
