The Complutense University of Madrid is a public research university located in Madrid, Spain. It is one of the oldest universities in the world, and is often considered the top university in Spain and one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

It was founded in 1293 by royal charter of Sancho IV of Castile. In 1785, the Complutense became one of the first universities in the world to grant a doctorate to a female student.
