The College of William & Mary is a public research university located in Williamsburg, Virginia. It is the second-oldest university in the United States after Harvard and the oldest in the American South. It is known as one of the "Public Ivies."
It was founded by charter in 1693, and named in honor of William III of England and Mary II of England, who were at the time the reigning British monarchs.
