Chiang Mai is the largest city in northern Thailand, along the Ping River.

It was founded in 1296 by King Mangrai, and was the capital city of the Kingdom of Lanna from 1296 to 1768. It was an independent city-state, known as the Kingdom of Chiang Mai, from 1774 to 1939.

Chiang Mai is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand, attracting approximately 5 million visitors each year. The city offers an endless stream of attractions, including its famous flying lanterns festivals, fireworks, night safaris, jungle treks, mountain climbing and mountain biking, waterfall swimming, elephant treks, zoos and wildlife preserves, and temples.
