Charlottesville is a town in north-central Virginia, about 70 miles from Richmond. A university town, it is the location of the prestigious University of Virginia.

Originally, the land was inhabited by the Monacan Native American Indians. It was established in 1762, and named in honor of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. 

Today, Charlottesville is known for its university, colonial history, ties to Thomas Jefferson and the location of his home Monticello, architecture, intellectual and multi-cultural feel, Southern cuisine, bookshops, coffee, and indie culture.
