Callao is a city in on the central western coast of Peru, and the country's main seaport, serving as a vital site of imports and exports in Peruvian economy for centuries.

The city is only 7 miles away from Lima, and the two growing cities are expected to eventually converge. Together, the two cities make up the Lima Metropolitan Area, one of the largest metropolitan areas the Americas.

It was founded by Spanish colonists in 1537.

Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra: I had a disappointing visit to this city in 1782, after being commissioned by the Spanish Navy to journey here in order to bring back a cargo of mercury. After a rough voyage, I reached the city and found that I had taken so long, the mercury had already been transported by someone else.
