Remains of ancient settlements, mainly city walls, have been found to say that the area has been inhabited since about the 3rd Century BC. The city of today was founded in the 14th Century, and later grew to become one of the most important cities in Spain.
Today, Bilbao is known for its beauty, architecture, modern designs, waterfront, proximity to both the sea and mountains, economy, transport, port, stock exchange, city planning, and parks. The city has also recently taken on a quirky reputation, building unique modern buildings and designs, and putting in decorative touches around the city that include a giant cat made of hedges and a giant spider named "Maman."
