Belleville is a town in southwestern Illinois.
It was founded in 1814, and officially made a town in 1850. Today, Belleville is known for its European-style cathedral, pictaresque downtown area, quaint shops, and military prescence.

Hunter S. Thompson: I moved here in 1955 to study electronics at the Scott Air Force Base. At the time, I was 18 years old and a part of the Air Force. I had hopes of becoming an aviator, but was rejected by the aviation cadet program. I was transferred to another base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, in 1956.
