Baton Rouge is the capital city of Louisiana, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It is the second-largest city in the state, behind New Orleans.
The area was first "discovered" by Europeans in 1669 by Pierre le Moyne d'Iberville. A French military post was established there in 1719.
Today, Baton Rouge is known for its southern cuisine, hospitality, bridges, history, and as one of the more intellectual and advanced cities of the American Deep South.
