Ballarat is a large town in the state of Victoria in southeastern Australia, located on the Yarrowee River 65 miles from Melbourne. It is the fifth most populated inland settlement in Australia.

It was founded as a sheep farm in 1837. Its name means "resting place" in Aboriginal language.

Today, Ballarat is known for its riverfront, gold rush and mining history, historic tourism and historical renacements, and surrounding agricultural land and vineyards.
