Aspen is a town in Colorado, located in the Rocky and Elk Mountains on the Roaring Fork River. It is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the United States.

The town was founded in 1880 as a silver mining town, given its name due to the plentiful aspen trees there. After the silver market collapsed in 1893, the town steadily declined in success and inhabitants, until it was converted into a boutique ski resort location in the 1950's. The town became known as glamorous, and movie stars and wealthy businessman began moving there, making it now a popular tourist destination.

Today, Aspen is known for its beautiful lake and mountain views, ski resorts, snowy winters, winter sporting events, mining history, wealthy homes, tourism, shopping, and acclaimed public school system.

Aspen in People's Lives

Hunter S. Thompson: My girlfriend Sondi and I traveled here from Brazil in May of 1963. A few days after arriving, Sondi and I got married here. We had a son, Juan, here in 1964. Shortly after he was born, we moved to Glen Ellen, California. I moved to nearby Woody Creek in 1967, and was often here for the rest of my life. In 1981, I was pulled over in the early hours of the morning here for running through a stop sign, and began yelling and raving at the police officer. I was arrested, and charged for drunk driving, though this was eventually dropped.

Milo Ventimiglia: I traveled here in 2002 to film scenes of the movie Winter Break
