Samuel Morse: Around 1858, my daughter Susan met a man in Puerto Rico and married him. My new son-in-law, a Dutch merchant, owned a peaceful hacienda in this town, and I often visited my daughter here, especially in the winters, which I spent here for many years. I ran a telegraph cable from the couple's downtown house and more secluded hacienda in 1859, in a ceremony that delighted the entire town and elevated my daughter to the heights of small-town society. I loved this town.
