Lincoln was the stepson of Sarah Bush Lincoln, whom he was close to and often referred to as "mother."

Lincoln met Mary Todd Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois in 1839, when he was 30. They were married in 1842. Prior to meeting Lincoln, Mary Todd had courted Stephen Douglas.

Lincoln argued with president James Buchanan in 1857, and the two became political enemies. Lincoln denounced him as an "accomplice to slavepower."

Lincoln spoke against then president James Polk.

Lincoln sat for sculptor Vinnie Ream in the mornings for 5 months in 1861, during which time they spoke about a variety of intelligent subjects, and became friends. The bust that came of these sessions is now in the Capitol Building's rotunda.

In 1861, Allan Pinkerton, Lincoln's head of security, saved his life more than once from would-be assassins.

Ulysses S. Grant was a close friend of Lincoln's.

Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14th, 1865, while attending a play with his wife.
